The NFL today announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, a Bucs player has now won the award in three consecutive months, after linebacker Devin White won back-to-back in November and December of 2019.
Just three games in the month of September, Winfield Jr. racked up 23 tackles (one for loss), including 15 solo tackles, three quarterback hits, 2 sacks, 2 Pass Breakups and one forced fumble. Among all NFL rookies, Winfield Jr. ranks second in tackles and sacks, tied for the lead in forced fumbles and tied for fourth in passes defense.
Winfield Jr. becomes the fourth Buccaneers player, and first defensive back, to earn NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month honors, joining Lavonte David (2012), Noah Spence (2016) and Devin White (2019, twice).
The most underrated player in the entire NFL is getting some much-deserved recognition.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Month for September, having provided tons of big plays for one of the league’s best defenses.
David racked up 24 tackles in three games, along with two tackles for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.
This is David’s ninth season all with Tampa Bay, was a second round draft pick and has proven time and time again he’s an elite LB in this league even though the NFL snubs him yearly.
David has been arguably the best player at his position for much of his career, yet still has just one Pro Bowl berth and two All-Pro nods to show for it. Now that the Bucs will be getting more national attention with five prime-time games this season, don’t be surprised if David finally becomes the household name he always should have been in Tampa Bay and is beloved by all of the Bucs fans
